SCRANTON, Pa.—The University of Scranton field hockey team
put together another dominating performance Saturday afternoon at
Fitzpatrick Field.
Behind two goals by junior midfielder Alyssa
Fania (Annandale, NJ/North Hunterdon) and one apiece
by sophomore midfielder Meghan
Kearney (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) and
junior back Blaire
Wilkie (Kulpsville, Pa./North Penn), the Royals
cruised past Albright College, 4-0, to move to 4-0 for the second
time in the last three seasons.
Scranton out-shot the Lions, 28-9, and its defensive backline of
juniors Michelle Lennon (South Walpole, Mass./Walpole)
and Bridget Brady (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Mt. St.
Joseph Academy), and sophomore Jessica Pankey (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton
Lakes) allowed only two shots on goal, one of which was
turned away by junior goalkeeper Maria Begliomene (Shickshinny, Pa./Northwest
Area), who earned her third career shutout.
Brady preserved Begliomene’s shutout by making a defensive
save in the closing minutes.
Fania, who scored her team-leading third and fourth goals of the
season, got the Royals on the scoreboard early, converting a
penalty stroke in the sixth minute for what turned out to be the
game-winning goal. Scranton added two more goals before
intermission, as Kearney scored her second goal of the year on a
ball crossed in front of the Lion cage by sophomore forward
Krista Osborne (Blue Bell,
Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy) in the 22nd minute.
Two minutes later, Wilkie followed up a shot on a scramble in
front of the cage and tapped it in for her second goal of the year.
Fania then closed out the scoring by tapping in a shot off a
scramble in front of the Albright cage early in the second half.
Senior Marguerite DeLucas (West Reading, Pa./Wyomissing Area) and
junior Selene Jones (Topton, Pa./Brandywine Heights) split time
evenly in goal for the Lions, now 1-4, and combined to make 15
saves.
In four games, the Royals have out-scored their opponents, 14-3,
while holding a 122-28 advantage in shot attempts.
Scranton will return to action this Tuesday, September 17, against
the Lady Monarchs of King’s College at Betzler Field in
Wilkes-Barre Township beginning at 7:00 p.m.
