READING, Pa. – The University of Scranton and Albright
College men's soccer teams played 110 minutes on Saturday night and
could not come up with a winner, settling for a 0-0 draw in double
overtime at Shirk Stadium. But for anyone in attendance or watching
online, it was obvious that Mother Nature was the clear victor.
After being delayed by nearly a half hour due to a preceding
game going double overtime, the match was played in steady, often
heavy, rain that stymied play. The teams combined for 17 shots,
including 11 by Scranton (4-0-3). The Royals entered play on
Saturday night averaging 28 shots per match.
The Royals' seven-match unbeaten streak to open the season is
the program's second-longest since 1993, trailing only last
season's 13-match unbeaten run. Scranton went on to go 17-3-2 and
reach the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament last season.
Freshman goalkeeper Eric Hintz (South Windsor,
Conn./South Windsor) made a pair of saves, including one
late in the second overtime, for his third shutout of the season,
all in the last four matches.
Senior forward John Spadaro (Stony Point, N.Y./Albertus
Magnus) came off the bench to lead Scranton with three
shots, all coming in the overtime periods.
Sophomore goalkeeper David Oram (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Meyers) made
four saves for Albright (4-2-1).
Scranton is back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 24, when the Royals
host Ithaca at 7 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
