NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—The University of Scranton volleyball team
faced two more nationally-ranked teams at the Christopher Newport
Invitational today.
And the results turned out to be the same, as the Royals dropped a
3-1 decision to 19th-ranked Christopher Newport and lost 3-0 to
seventh-ranked and Landmark Conference rival Juniata College.
Friday evening, Scranton lost to 15th-ranked Eastern and
17th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Despite the losses, senior outside hitterJulia Crilly (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute)
reached another personal milestone, finishing with 11 digs today to
go over the 1,000 mark in her career. After after recording the
1,000th kill of her career in last Wednesday’s match against
Muhlenberg, Crilly is now one of only six players in Scranton
history with more than 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career.
Today, she had 11 kills and six digs against Christopher Newport
and four kills and five digs against Juniata.
The Royals, now 5-16, got another solid performance from sophomore
middle hitter Rachael Cisto (Oxford, Conn./Sacred Heart
Academy), who had six kills and five blocks against
Christopher Newport and five blocks against Juniata. Freshman
setter Bailey Woods (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven)
also provide a spark for Scranton, finishing with 25 assists and 11
digs against Christopher Newport.
Scranton will travel to Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, next weekend
for the first round of round-robin play in the Landmark
Conference. The Royals meet Juniata on Saturday, October 5,
at 1:00 p.m. and Moravian College later that evening at 6:00
p.m.
