SCRANTON, Pa.—Juniata College snapped The University of
Scranton field hockey team’s 8-game winning streak with a
come-from-behind 2-1 victory in double overtime in the Landmark
Conference opener for both teams Saturday at Fitzpatrick Field.
Senior forward Liz Slimak (Elizabethtown, Pa./Lower Dauphin)
converted a penalty stroke in 94th minute for the game-winning goal
as the Eagles improved to 5-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Juniata tied it up in the 68th minute on an unassisted goal by
sophomore forward Allison Groft (Hanover, Pa./Southern Western),
who deflected in a ball after Scranton junior goalkeeper Krista Mundy (North Caldwell, NJ/West Essex)
made a save on a previous shot attempt by Eagle junior back Tori
Buser (Allentown, Pa./Parkland).
Less than a minute before Groft’s game-tying goal, the
Royals broke a scoreless tie when junior midfielder Kathleen Keale (Wall, NJ/Wall) slammed in shot
for a goal off a scramble in front of the Juniata cage for her
third goal of the season.
Both teams’ defenses made sure that shots were few and far
between, as Juniata managed just 12 shots and the Royals 10.
Mundy finished with a season-high seven saves while playing all 94
minutes while Juniata’s Shelby Miller (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J.
Roberts) made four and did not allow a goal in just over 80 minutes
of action. Junior Julianne Jones (Middleburg, Pa./Midd-West)
played the other 14 minutes in goal for the Eagles.
The loss drops the Royals to 8-1 overall and 0-1 in the
Landmark.
A win today by Scranton would have tied the school record for
consecutive wins set by the 1997 team led by then head coach Beth
Howlett.
The Royals will return to Landmark Conference action next Friday
evening at 7:00 p.m. against Goucher College at Fitzpatrick
Field.
