Senior outside hitterJulia Crilly (Rochester, NY/Aquinas
Institute) is closing in on a record that was once
thought unreachable.
She recorded 36 kills today, including the 1600th of her career, in
leading The University of Scranton volleyball team to victories
over Wells College, 3-1, and Rutgers-Camden, 3-0, Saturday at the
Long Center. Crilly is now 36 kills shy of breaking Anne
McGovern's (1996-1999) all-time Royal record of 1650 with
three matches remaining in the regular season and a Landmark
Conference semifinal match at Susquehanna on Tuesday, November
4.
Crilly dominated Wells, finishing with 23 kills and 17 digs, and
came back later in the afternoon to post 13 more kills against
Rutgers-Camden.
In the victory over Wells, Scranton also received eight kills and
eight digs from junior outside hitterLizzy Zimmermann (Livingston,
NJ/Livingston), 12 digs from sophomore libero
Danielle Cafiero (Merrick, NY/Kellenberg
Memorial), and 35 assists, two service aces, and two
total blocks from sophomore setter Brittany Cafiero (Merrick, NY/Kellenberg
Memorial).
Junior middle hitter Molly Loftus (Mount Carmel,
Pa./Our Lady of Lourdes) filled in admirably in place
of the injured Rachael Cisto (Oxford, Conn./Sacred Heart Academy)
at middle hitter, finishing with seven kills and three total
blocks.
Sophomore middle hitter Meredith Kadjeski (Mechanicsburg,
Pa./Cumberland Valley) led Wells with 11 kills and freshmen Eliza
Schwab (Hartland, NY/Royialton-Hartland), Olyvia Brazier (Stony
Brook, NY/Ward Melville) and Anuhea Leite-Ay Yo (Hilo,
Hawaii/Kamehameha) combined for 40 digs.
In the victory over Rutgers-Camden, junior Stephanie Klug (Mountain Top,
Pa./Crestwood) and Zimmermann combined for 17 kills
to support Crilly on the offensive end and Danielle Cafiero and
freshman Morgan Rentzheimer (Laurys Station,
Pa./Parkland) combined for 15 kills on defense as the
Royals improved to 22-9 on the season.
Scranton's 22 wins are the most for the program since
2008.
