MADISON, NJ—Sophomore Amanda Maresca (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) scored her first career goal Monday evening, lifting The University of Scranton field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Drew University in Landmark Conference action.

Maresca broke through in the 56th minute of the second half on a play set up by senior Cassie Mullen (Chester Springs, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) to help the Royals win their second straight game, improve to 12-4 overall,  and move into a three-way tie for second place with a 4-2 record in league play.  In addition, Scranton has now locked up a Landmark postseason tournament berth for the fourth straight season and for the fifth time in the conference’s eight-year history.

Defensively, the Royals held the Rangers, now 3-11 overall and 2-4 in conference play, to just five shots, only two of which ended up on goal.  Both of those attempts were saved by Scranton senior goalkeeper Krista Mundy (North Caldwell, NJ/West Essex), who picked up her sixth shutout of the season and the 15th of her career.  Sarah Stewart finished with four saves in goal for the Rangers.

The Royals had an opportunity to add to their lead late in the second half, but Drew’s Cailyn Breski came up with a defensive save on a shot attempt by Mullen, who recorded four of the Royals’ 10 shots.  Mullen’s assist on Maresca’s game-winning goal was her seventh of the season, one behind senior Alyssa Fania’s (Annandale, NJ/North Hunterdon) team-leading total of eight.

Scranton will return to action tomorrow evening at home at 7:00 p.m. against Vassar College before closing out the regular-season this Saturday, November 1, against Elizabethtown in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
