BETHLEHEM, Pa.—The University of Scranton volleyball team
locked up a Landmark Conference tournament berth by defeating
Elizabethtown College, 3-0, and Moravian College, 3-2, at Johnston
Hall Saturday.
The wins improved the Royals to 18-7 overall and 5-0 in the
conference play. With just two conference matches remaining,
Scranton can finish no worse than third place in the battle for the
top four spots.
Senior Julia Crilly (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute)
had 11 kills and eight digs and junior Lizzy Zimmermann (Livingston, NJ/Livingston)
finished with nine kills and four digs in the victory over
Elizabethtown. Scranton, which hit a respectable .178 for the
match, also received six kills and nine digs from freshman
Morgan Rentzheimer (Laurys Station,
Pa./Parkland) and 26 assists, three service aces, and five
digs from sophomore Brittany Cafiero (Merrick, NY/Kellenberg
Memorial).
In the win over Moravian, junior Rachael Cisto (Oxford, Conn./Sacred Heart
Academy) and Crilly combined for 25 kills and Zimmermann
finished with nine kills and 16 digs for Scranton, which overcame a
sluggish start to pull out the victory. After hitting -.088
in losing the first set 25-9, the Royals hit .158 and .243 in
winning the second and third sets and pulled it out with a 15-10
win in the fifth and deciding set. Cafiero had 41 assists and
12 digs and junior Stephanie Klug (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood)
chipped in nine kills.
Crilly recorded a ‘double-double’ in kills and digs
against Moravian this afternoon, her 16th of the season and the
65th of her career.
Scranton returns to action this Thursday, October 9, against the
Cougars of Misericordia University at the Anderson Center in
Dallas, Pennsylvania, beginnning at 7:00 p.m.
