HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The University of Scranton field hockey team was less than two minutes from a victory on Saturday afternoon, but ultimately suffered a 2-1 loss in double overtime against Juniata at Knox Stadium.
The Royals (8-2, 1-1 Landmark) held a 1-0 lead until the 68:12 mark when Juniata (8-2, 2-0 Landmark) tied up the match off a penalty corner to force overtime. The Eagles won it 4:48 into the second overtime.
Scranton received a goal in the 17th minute from junior forward Krista Osborne (Blue Bell, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy Academy) on an assist by senior midfielder Alyssa Fania (Annandale, N.J./North Hunterdon). The goal was Osborne's 16th of the season, which is tied for fifth-most in a single season in school history. Her 34 points this season are tied for ninth-most in a single season in Scranton history.
For Fania, the assist was her sixth of the season, but more importantly, it was the 19th of her career, matching the school record set by Traci Zarbatany (1986-89). She has 32 points on the season, tying her career high, which she set last season. Fania now has 89 career points, which rank fifth in school history.
The Royals held a 25-23 advantage in shots in the fast-paced match. They also had an 18-16 edge in penalty corners, including 14 penalty corners in the second half. Senior goalkeeper Krista Mundy (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) made a season-high eight saves in the loss.
Scranton returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 8, when the Royals host King's in a non-conference contest at 4 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
