MADISON, NJ—The University of Scranton softball team split
its Landmark Conference opener this afternoon against Drew
University, taking advantage of five errors by the Rangers to win
the first game, 7-1, but lost the nightcap, 8-3.
In the opener, senior Caitlin McHenry (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter
Panas) had two hits and drove in a pair of runs and
freshman Kaitlin O’Sullivan (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth
Academy) drove in two runs to back up a sophomore pitcher
Alison Kucharski (Hampton, NJ;/North
Hunterdon), who struck out two batters and scattered nine
hits to pick up the complete game victory.
Freshmen Jacqueline DeSarro (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem
Catholic) finished with two hits, including a double, and
drove in a run and fellow freshman Shannon Stricker (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell
Egan) belted a double for the Royals, now 3-6 overall and
1-1 in the Landmark.
The Royals belted out eight hits in the second game, but fell
behind 7-0 after three innings and never fully recovered.
Junior Stephanie Romano (Oak Ridge, NJ/West Milford)
and Stricker each had two hits and drove in a run and designated
hitter Angelica Titor (Bellrose Village, NY/Floral Park
Memorial) had a hit and an RBI. Stricker has hit
safely in her last four games and her three hits today raises her
team-leading batting average to .484.
By driving in two runs in the first game, McHenry moved into a tie
for eighth-place on the Royals’ all-time list with 72, tying
former teammate Jamie Shackles (72, 2010-2013).
The Royals will host Misericordia University in their home opener
on Wednesday, March 26, at the Jessup Youth Sports Complex in
Jessup beginning at 4:00 p.m.
