EDWARDSVILLE, Pa.—Freshman Jacqueline DeSarro (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem
Catholic) belted a grand slam to ignite a 7-run rally to
lead The University of Scranton to an 11-3 victory over Wilkes
University in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader
Tuesday at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
Playing for the first time in 10 days, the Royals were a bit rusty
in the opener, dropping an 8-0 decision in six innings.
Scranton, now 4-7, also received a two-run home run from senior
Caitlin McHenry (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter
Panas),four hits from freshman Angelica Titor (Bellerose Village, NY/Floral Park
Memorial), and junior Gabrielle Santarelli (Jessup, Pa./Valley View)
finished with three hits and scored twice. Sophomore pitcher
Jamie Hampsey (Tunkhannock,
Pa./Tunkhannock) improved to 2-3 on the season by striking
out five and scattering four hits while not allowing an earned
run.
Wilkes took advantage of four errors in the bottom of the fourth
inning to score three times before DeSarro smacked her second home
run of the season in the top half of the fifth to put the Royals
ahead for good. The Lady Colonels had their troubles in the
field, too, committing five errors that led to seven unearned
runs.
Junior Mandy Seccia (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) had two of the
Lady Colonels’ four hits in the nightcap.
In the first game, Wilkes senior pitcher Alysha Bixler
(Williamstown, Pa./Williams Valley) scattered six hits and struck
out two batters and helped her cause with two hits, including
a home run, and drove in three runs.
Freshman Christine Keiffer (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) had
two of Scranton’s six hits.
McHenry’s home run in the second game was her second of the
season and the 17th of her career, which is now the fourth most in
Royals’ history.
Scranton will return to action tomorrow against Misericordia
University in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
in Dallas, Pennsylvania.
