SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The University of Scranton baseball team overcame a six-run deficit to pull even, but eventually fell to Susquehanna, 11-6, on Sunday afternoon at Bollinger Field.
Scranton (8-10, 3-6 Landmark) scored twice in the sixth and four times in the eighth to draw even, but Susquehanna (19-8, 9-3 Landmark) scored five times in the bottom of the eighth to secure the victory.
After falling behind, 6-0, through five innings, the Royals began their comeback in the sixth when junior first baseman Ross Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights/Blair Academy, N.J.) had an RBI single and junior left fielder Michael Umerich (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) later scored on a double play.
Scranton then knotted the score in the top of the eighth with a big rally. Sophomore center fielder Zach Dignam (Bridgewater, N.J./Immaculata), who finished with three hits, ripped a two-run homer to spark the rally. Senior catcher Eddie Ravert (Havertown, Pa./Malvern Prep) and sophomore outfielder Brian Healy (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) later had bases-loaded walks to drive in runs that led to the tie score.
But the Crusaders rallied against the Royals' bullpen in the eighth to score five times, and Scranton could not put together one final rally in the ninth.
Senior right fielder Michael Gaeta (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) had two hits, Umerich scored twice and freshman shortstop Patrick O'Dell (Phoenixville, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) singled and scored in the loss.
The Royals are back in action on Monday when they host Merchant Marine Academy in a Landmark Conference doubleheader at 4 p.m. at PNC Field in Moosic, Pa.
