The University of Scranton baseball team was unable to make
Senior Day a memorable one for its six seniors as the Royals lost
both ends of a doubleheader to Moravian, 7-3 and 12-1, on Saturday
afternoon at Connell Park.
Scranton (8-14, 3-10 Landmark) rallied from an early 3-0 deficit
in the opener to pull even after three innings. Junior first
baseman Ross Danzig (Clarks
Green, Pa./Abington Heights/Blair Academy) had an RBI
single in the first inning, and senior center fielder Michael
Gaeta (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) had an RBI double and
senior third baseman Mike Trabulsi
(Malverne, N.Y./Chaminade) had an RBI single in the
third.
Junior righty James Sawyer
(Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) held Moravian (26-6, 15-3
Landmark) in check after a rough first inning, keeping the game
tied at 3 heading into the seventh before he tired. Sawyer wound up
allowing five runs on five hits, but walked seven, in six innings
while getting hung with his first loss of the season after the
Greyhounds scored four times in the top of the seventh.
Junior left fielder Michael Umerich
(Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) singled twice,
walked twice and scored twice, Gaeta singled, doubled, scored and
drove in a run, and senior designated hitter Eric Pizzico
(Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) had a pair of singles in the
loss.
In the second game, Moravian jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the
top of the second, then put the game away with three runs in the
fourth and five more in the sixth.
Scranton got an RBI single from Umerich in the second inning. He
drove in senior Matt Maghini
(Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand), who reached on an infield
single to start the inning.
Between games, the Royals honored their six seniors –
Gaeta, Trabulsi, Pizzico, Maghini, catcher Eddie Ravert
(Havertown, Pa./Malvern Prep) and pitcher Christopher Rom
(Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh).
The teams will complete the three-game series on Monday at 3
p.m. at Connell Park.
