LEWISBURG, Pa. – Junior right-hander Matt Calamoneri (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) threw a three-hit shutout to lead The University of Scranton baseball team to a 1-0 victory over Juniata in the opening game of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at DePew Field at Bucknell University.
Juniata rallied to win the second game, 5-4.
Calamoneri worked around two singles, a triple and two walks for his second victory over the season. The Royals (5-6, 2-3 Landmark) got their lone run in the second inning when sophomore right fielder Kyle Hamer (Germantown, Md./St. John's College H.S.) singled to drive in senior designated hitter Eric Pizzico (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford), who had doubled.
In the second game, Scranton jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two runs in the second inning. Junior left fielder Nick Papillo (Germantown, Md./St. John's College H.S.) and sophomore center fielder Zach Dignam (Bridgewater, N.J./Immaculata) had RBI singles in the inning.
Juniata (4-16, 1-7 Landmark) got a run back in the fourth, then scored four times in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead. Scranton got a run back in the sixth on an RBI sacrifice fly by senior third baseman Mike Trabulsi (Malverne, N.Y./Chaminade), then put runners on second and third with no outs in the bottom of the seventh, but managed just one run on an RBI sac fly by sophomore catcher Tyler Ferretti (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough).
The Royals return to action on Thursday when they host Baptist Bible College at 3:30 p.m. at Connell Park.
