DALLAS, Pa. – The University of Scranton softball team received four hits from junior outfielder Gabrielle Santarelli (Peckville, Pa./Valley View) on Wednesday afternoon, but her work at the top of the lineup wasn't enough as the Royals dropped a doubleheader, 8-5 and 4-1, at Misericordia.
Santarelli had two hits and scored a run in the opener, which Scranton (4-9) led, 3-0, after three innings before Misericordia (8-8) scored six times in the fourth to move ahead.
The Royals also received a single and two RBIs from freshman shortstop Shannon Stricker (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell Egan) and RBI singles from freshman first baseman Kaitlin O'Sullivan (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy) and freshman left fielder Jamie SanFilippo (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E.Wagner).
Sophomore outfielder Maria Gentile (Jefferson Township, Pa./North Pocono) and freshman designated player Marisa Ciriello (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) both had singles and scored a run in the opener.
In the second game, Santarelli singled twice and junior second baseman Stephanie Romano (Oak Ridge, N.J./West Milford) had two hits and an RBI in the defeat.
Scranton returns to action on Saturday, April 5, when it hosts Elizabethtown at 1 p.m. at the Jessup Youth Sports Complex.
