SCRANTON, Pa.—Turnabout was fair play for The University of
Scranton and Marywood University in a non-conference softball
doubleheader today at Pacer Field.
After Marywood belted out 11 hits in winning the first game, 12-4,
in six innings, the Royals came back to take the nightcap, also by
the score of 12-4, behind a 3-hit, 5-RBI performance by freshman
Angelica Titor (Bellrose Village, NY/Floral Park
Memorial).
Marywood broke open the first game with a five-run rally in the
third inning to extend a 2-1 lead into a 7-1 cushion.
Sophomore Stephanie Bagniewski (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) and senior
Chelsea Zimmerman (Reading, Pa./Reading Central Catholic) combined
for four hits and four RBI and senior Samantha Rayhon (Glen
Gardner, NJ/North Hunterdon) and sophomore Kathleen Rossi (Jessup,
Pa./Valley View) each belted a triple.
Freshman pitcher Lindsey Gibbs (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower
Catholic High School for Girls) went four innings and struck out
five batters to pick up the win on the mound. She is now 8-3
on the season.
Senior Caitlin McHenry (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter
Panas) finished with two hits, including a double, and
drove in two runs and junior Karey Fortier (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks
South) smacked a double for Scranton.
In the nightcap, the Royals exploded for five runs in the fifth
and three more in the sixth to break a 3-3 tie.
In addition to Titor, Scranton also received three hits apiece
from freshmen Shannon Stricker (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell
Egan) and Kaitlin O’Sullivan (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth
Academy) and two apiece from junior Stephanie Romano (Oak Ridge, NJ/West Milford),
McHenry, and freshman Jenna
Snyder (Thornwood, NY/Westlake).
Sophomore Alison Kucharski (Hampton, NJ/North Hunterdon)
picked up the win on the mound to improve to 3-6. She struck
out two, scattered 11 hits, and allowed only three earned runs.
Junior Diana Butash (Throop, Pa./Mid Valley) led the Pacers in the
second game with four hits, including a double and a triple, and
freshman Brooke Labs (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) and Bagniewski
chipped in two hits apiece.
McHenry’s four hits today gives her 97 for her career.
Marywood is now 15-9 on the season while Scranton is 7-16.
Weather-permitting, the Royals will return to action tomorrow
afternoon against Moravian College in a Landmark Conference
doubleheader beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the Jessup Youth Sports
Complex.
