MADISON, N.J. – The University of Scranton baseball team failed to come up with the big hit on Saturday, dropping both ends of a Landmark Conference doubleheader against Drew University, 5-2 and 8-1, at Doc Young Field.
In the opener, the Royals (9-19, 4-13 Landmark) took an early 1-0 lead on a two-out RBI single by sophomore right fielder Kyle Hamer (Germantown, Md./St. John's College H.S.), which drove in junior first baseman Ross Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights/Blair Academy, N.J.), who had walked and moved to third on a double by senior center fielder Michael Gaeta (Cranford, N.J./Cranford).
But Drew (16-19, 9-8 Landmark) tied the score with a run in the third, and the score remained that way until the bottom of the sixth. That's when the Rangers finally got to Scranton's freshman lefty, Michael Haag (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining/Bridgton Academy, Maine), scoring four times to take the lead.
Haag wound up going the distance for Scranton, striking out seven in the process.
The Royals staged a rally in the seventh, scoring a run on an RBI single by freshman second baseman Anthony Simone (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley Senior). But the rally ended there. Hamer and freshman shortstop Patrick O'Dell (Phoenixville, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) each finished with two hits.
In the second game, Drew scored single runs in the first and second, then tallied five times in the third to take control. Scranton's lone run came in the fourth when Danzig doubled and later scored on an RBI ground out by senior third baseman Mike Trabulsi (Malverne, N.Y./Chaminade).
Junior right-hander Josh Bayzick (Sugarloaf, Pa./Hazleton) gave the Royals some solid relief work on the mound, allowing just one run on four hits and a walk in 3 2/3 innings.
Scranton and Drew will complete the three-game series when they play the final game on Sunday at noon at Doc Young Field.
