NEW YORK, NY—Junior Gabrielle Santarelli (Jessup, Pa./Valley View) smacked a three-run home run to lead The University of Scranton softball team to a 9-6 victory over Hunter College in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader Friday evening at Randall’s Island.
The Hawks, however, returned the favor in the nightcap, scoring twice in their final at-bat to pull out an 11-9 victory.
In the first game, junior Stephanie Romano (Oak Ridge, NJ/West Milford) and freshman Jenna Snyder (Thornwood, NY/Westlake) had two hits apiece and senior Caitlin McHenry (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) and freshman Angelica Titor (Bellerose Village, NY/Floral Park Memorial) each belted a double to pace the Royals’ 11-hit attack.
Freshman pitcher Kayla Hatki (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) came on in relief and pitched the final five innings—scattering two hits while striking out four—to pick up the win. She is now 2-1 on the year.
Santarelli’s home run was her second of the season and the third of her career.
Scranton made a valiant comeback in the nightcap, erasing a eight-run deficit after three innings before rallying to tie it up with a 5-run outburst in the sixth inning. The Hawks, however, pulled it out on a two-run home run by junior Meghan O’Shea with two outs in the seventh. She finished with five hits, drove in three runs, and scored three times.
Freshman Shannon Stricker (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell Egan) had two hits and drove in four runs and sophomore Maria Gentile (Jefferson Township, Pa./North Pocono) finished with three hits and scored twice for Scranton. The Royals also received two hits apiece from freshman Kaitlin O’Sullivan (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy) and McHenry.
McHenry hit another double in the in the nightcap to bring her career total to 21, which is tied for eighth place on the Royals’ all-time list.
Scranton returns to action this afternoon against Catholic University in its final Landmark Conference doubleheader of the season. The Royals are now 8-19 on the year.
