NEW YORK, NY—Junior Gabrielle Santarelli (Jessup, Pa./Valley View) smacked a three-run home run to lead The University of Scranton softball team to a 9-6 victory over Hunter College in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader Friday evening at Randall’s Island.

The Hawks, however, returned the favor in the nightcap, scoring twice in their final at-bat to pull out an 11-9 victory.

In the first game, junior Stephanie Romano (Oak Ridge, NJ/West Milford) and freshman Jenna Snyder (Thornwood, NY/Westlake) had two hits apiece and senior Caitlin McHenry (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) and freshman Angelica Titor (Bellerose Village, NY/Floral Park Memorial) each belted a double to pace the Royals’ 11-hit attack.

Freshman pitcher Kayla Hatki (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) came on in relief and pitched the final five innings—scattering two hits while striking out four—to pick up the win.  She is now 2-1 on the year.

Santarelli’s home run was her second of the season and the third of her career.

Freshman Shannon Stricker (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell Egan) had two hits and drove in four runs and sophomore Maria Gentile (Jefferson Township, Pa./North Pocono) finished with three hits and scored twice for Scranton.  The Royals also received two hits apiece from freshman Kaitlin O’Sullivan (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy) and McHenry.

McHenry hit another double in the in the nightcap to bring her career total to 21, which is tied for eighth place on the Royals’ all-time list.
