ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Senior goalkeeper Krista Mundy (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) made seven saves, the back line added a pair of defensive saves, and junior forward Krista Osborne (Blue Bell, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy Academy) scored the game's only goal as The University of Scranton field hockey team defeated Muhlenberg, 1-0, on Friday evening at Scotty Wood Stadium.
Mundy made seven first-half saves and senior defenders Michelle Lennon (South Walpole, Mass./Walpole) and Bridget Brady (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) added defensive saves in the opening 19 minutes. Mundy added two more second-half saves to make Osborne's goal stand up.
Osborne put Scranton ahead just 5:43 into the game when she tipped in a pass from the top of the circle by senior midfielder Kathleen Keale (Wall, N.J./Wall). It was Osborne's 10th career goal and Keale's third career assist.
The defense took over from there as Lennon made her defensive save less than three minutes later, and 10 minutes after that, Brady came through to help Mundy post her 10th career shutout while picking up her 18th career victory.
Senior midfielder Alyssa Fania (Annandale, N.J./North Hunterdon) led the Royals with four shots. Muhlenberg (0-1) outshot the Royals, 18-8, and held a 16-7 advantage in penalty corners, but could not break through against the Scranton defense, which allowed just 1.3 goals per game last season.
The victory improves Scranton to 4-1 in season openers over the past five seasons. The Royals are now 6-7 all-time against Muhlenberg, including season-opening victories each of the past two seasons.
The Royals return to action on Saturday when they host Keystone College at 5 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
