ALLENTOWN, Pa.—Senior Julia Crilly (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) recorded 18 kills and 15 digs and junior Lizzy Zimmermann (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) had 10 kills and 10 digs, but it wasn’t enough to keep The University of Scranton volleyball team from dropping a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Muhlenberg College Thursday evening.
The Royals, now 13-7, also received 33 assists and 13 digs from sophomore Brittany Cafiero (Merrick, NY/Kellenberg Memorial), 10 digs from junior Kimberly Marino (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central), five kills and 13 digs from freshman Morgan Rentzheimer (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland), and seven kills and six blocks from junior Rachael Cisto (Oxford, Conn./Sacred Heart Academy).
It was a nip-and-tuck affair the whole way. Scranton fought back after dropping the first set 25-15 to win 29-27 in the second and forced a fifth set by recording a 25-21 win in the fourth. The Mules, however, pulled out a 16-14 win to improve to 14-2 on the season.
Crilly’s ‘double-double’ was her 13th of the season and the 62nd of her career. She enters this weekend’s Landmark Conference matches needing only 26 kills to become one of only three players in Scranton history with at least 1500 kills in a career, joining all-time leader Anne McGovern (1650, 1996-1999) and Marta DeLong (1510, 2001-2004).
The Royals are now 2-2 in matches decided in five sets.
Scranton will take on Goucher College on Saturday, September 27, at 1:30 p.m. at the DuFour Center on the campus of Catholic University in Washington, DC. Later on that evening at 6:30 p.m., the Royals will play the Cardinals.
