Royals Overcome Late Deficits In 2nd & 3rd Sets To Defeat Marywood Tuesday At The Long Center

SCRANTON, Pa.—There was no quit in The University of Scranton volleyball team Tuesday evening against Marywood University at the Long Center.

After winning the first set 25-20, the Royals overcame late deficits to win both the second and third sets, 27-25 and 25-22, respectively, to improve to 16-7 on the season.  The loss dropped the Pacers to 5-5.

Scranton found itself trailing 24-20 in the second set and overcame deficits of 6-0 and 20-15 in the third to pull out the victory.

Junior Lizzy Zimmermann (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) led the Royals with 14 kills and 10 digs—her third ‘double-double’ of the season—and senior Julia Crilly (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) and junior Rachael Cisto (Oxford, Conn./Sacred Heart Academy) combined for 21 kills.  

Scranton, which hit .246 for the match, also received 36 assists and 11 digs from sophomore Brittany Cafiero (Merrick, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) and freshman Morgan Rentzheimer (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland) had three service aces, four digs and three kills.

SeniorAshley Zalewski (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) led the Pacers with eight kills and junior Amy Kester (Bethlehem, Pa./Notre Dame Green Pond) and senior Kathleen Reilly (Jim Thorpe, Pa.Marian Catholic) combined for 13 kills.  In the first set, seniorKelly Chadwick (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) became Marywood's all-time leader in assists.  She finished with 10 for the match.

It was another historic night for Crilly, who moved past Marta DeLong (1510, 2001-2004) into second place on the Royals all-time list for most kills.  Crilly now has 1520 in her career.  Cisto’s two blocks tonight moved her into 14th place on Scranton’s all-time list with 197.

The Royals will return to action this Saturday, October 4, against Elizabethtown College (11:00 am) and Moravian College (4 pm) in a Landmark Conference tri-match to be played at Johnston Hall on the campus of Moravian College in Bethlehem.
