SALISBURY, Md.—The University of Scranton volleyball team
split a pair of matches at the Sea Gull Classic Friday evening,
defeating William Peace (NC), 3-0, in its opening match before
dropping a hard-fought 3-1 decision to the host school, Salisbury
University.
Senior Julia Crilly (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute)
had 11 kills and 10 digs and junior Lizzy Zimmermann (Livingston, NJ/Livingston)
finished with five service aces and nine digs in the win over
William Peace. The Royals, now 5-1, also received 13 digs
from freshman Morgan Rentzheimer (Laurys Station,
Pa./Parkland) and 15 assists from sophomore Brittany Cafiero (Merrick, NY/Kellenberg
Memorial).
The Royals gave the home standing Sea Gulls all they could handle
in their next match. Tied 1-1 in sets, Scranton overcame a
20-13 deficit to take a 23-22 lead in the third set, but Salisbury
regained its composure to win the next three points and emerge with
a 25-23 victory. The Sea Gulls carried that momentum into the
fourth and deciding set, building up leads of 8-4, 10-5, 16-7, and
20-8 before sealing it with a 25-15 victory.
Crilly led the way once again, finishing with 14 kills and nine
digs, Zimmermann chipped in nine kills and 14 digs, and junior Stephanie Klug (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood)
had with eight kills and four blocks. Scranton also received
31 assists and 10 digs from Cafiero and her twin sister, Danielle Cafiero (Merrick, NY/Kellenberg
Memorial), came up with 10 digs from her libero
position.
With the win in the second match, Salisbury remains undefeated at
6-0.
The Royals will take on Virginia Wesleyan and Eastern Mennonite
Saturday.
