SALISBURY, Md. – The University of Scranton women's volleyball continued its strong start to the season with a pair of victories – 3-0 over Virginia Wesleyan and Eastern Mennonite – in the Sea Gull Classic at Salisbury University in Salisbury, Md. on Saturday.
After splitting a pair of matches on Friday, the Royals (7-1) were back in action at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning and wasted little time dispatching Virginia Wesleyan, 25-20, 25-14 and 26-24. Senior outside hitter Julia Crilly (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) led the charge with 16 kills and 11 digs.
The Royals also received 36 assists and eight digs from sophomore setter Brittany Cafiero (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), nine kills and two blocks from junior middle hitter Stephanie Klug (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) and eight kills and eight digs from junior outside hitter Lizzy Zimmermann (Livingston, N.J./Livingston).
Following the win, Scranton was right back in action against Eastern Mennonite, winning 25-14, 25-20 and 26-24. Zimmermann led the team with nine kills and 16 digs, and Crilly had seven kills. Sophomore setter Bailey Woods (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) had 28 assists, sophomore libero Danielle Cafiero (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) had 15 digs, and Klug finished with six blocks, three kills and a dig.
Crilly and Klug both earned all-tournament honors for their play over the two days. Crilly finished the four matches with 49 kills and 35 digs. Klug completed the weekend with 19 blocks and 13 kills.
Scranton is back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 9, when it hosts Cortland State at 6 p.m. in the Long Center.
