SCRANTON, Pa.—The University of Scranton field hockey team
is on a roll!
The Royals scored three goals in the opening six minutes, built up
a 6-0 halftime lead, and cruised to a 9-0 victory over backyard
neighbor Marywood University Saturday afternoon at Fitzpatrick
Field.
Scranton is now 3-0 and has yet to allow a goal, out-scoring its
first three opponents 19-0. It is the first time since 1991 that
the Royals have opened a season with three consecutive
shutouts.
Seniors Alyssa
Fania (Annandale, NJ/North Hunterdon) and Cassie Mullen (Chester Springs, Pa./Villa Maria
Academy) led Scranton with two goals and an assist apiece
and juniors Krista
Osborne (Blue Bell, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy) and Alyssa Whitman (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley)
each tallied a pair.
The Royals also received a goal from junior Bryn
Frankhouser (Plymouth Meeting,
Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) and senior Michelle Lennon (South Walpole, Pa./Walpole),
junior Meghan
Kearney (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) and
sophomore Elizabeth Yorey (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) were
each credited with an assist.
Freshman goalkeeper Kayle Huey (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken) made a
game-high 14 saves and junior Maria Ryle (Clay, NY/Cicero-North
Syracuse) and freshman Tori Jo Kakusian (Vestal, NY/Vestal) were
each credited with a defensive save for the Pacers, now 1-2.
With five points today, Fania moved into sole possession of fifth
place on the Royals’ all-time scoring list with 72 total
points (28 goals, 16 assists), while Mullen is now 23rd after
today’s five-point effort gives her 42 career points (18
goals, 6 assists).
The Royals will close out a three-game home stand this Tuesday,
September 9, against Immaculata University beginning at 7:00 p.m.
at Fitzpatrick Field.
