BALTIMORE, Md. – The University of Scranton women's soccer team used goals by freshman midfielder Erica Licari (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) and senior Gianna Vitolo (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) to edge Goucher, 2-1, on Saturday for the team's eighth straight win.

The Royals (9-2-1, 3-0 Landmark) have not lost since dropping a 1-0 decision to Lebanon Valley on Sept. 12. Since then, they have outscored their opponents, 27-2, in eight matches.

After a scoreless first half, Licari broke the ice at the 58-minute mark when she converted a corner kick by junior midfielder Kelly Egan (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex). The goal was Licari's first while Egan picked up her fifth assist of the season and 15th of her career. She now leads the team with 15 points this season.

Scranton appeared to put the match away when Vitolo scored in the 80th minute on a corner kick for her third goal of the season and 17th of her career. But Goucher answered two minutes later with a goal that broke Scranton's scoreless streak at 620 minutes and made for a tense final eight minutes for the Royals.

Scranton controlled the match for most of the afternoon, outshooting Goucher (7-4-2, 1-2 Landmark), 20-5. Junior midfielder Christina Akalski (Long Beach, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) had a team-high five shots while Vitolo had four. The Royals also had an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore goalkeeper Krissy Welsh (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) made a pair of saves for her eighth victory of the season and 17th of her career.

Scranton will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 14, when the Royals visit Drew University in Madison, N.J. for a Landmark Conference match at 7:30 p.m.
