SCRANTON, Pa. - The University of Scranton field hockey team pulled away from visiting Goucher with three second half goals, as the Royals coasted past the visiting Gophers in a 4-0 victory at Fitzpatrick Field on Saturday in Landmark Conference play.
With the win, Scranton improved to 11-1 overall and 2-1 in the Landmark, while Goucher fell to 8-3, 1-2 in the Landmark with the loss.
The scoring began for the Royals in the 12th minute, as sophomore Ryan Jones (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) scored her second goal of the season off an assist from senior Jessica Pankey (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes), giving Scranton the early 1-0 lead.
Going into the half, Pankey just missed on a penalty stroke, but the Royals controlled play in the first half, outshooting the Gophers 5-1 overall in the period.
But, in the second half, Scranton took complete control of the contest, first scoring in the 39th minute, as senior Alyssa Whitman (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) scored her seventh goal of the year off an assist from Jones, giving the Royals a 2-0 lead.
The scoring continued for Scranton in the 64th minute, as Pankey scored her sixth goal of the year off yet another assist by Jones, making it a 3-0 game.
The final goal of the match came in the 65th minute, when junior Ana Bisciello (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park Memorial) scored the first goal of her career off an assist from senior Bryn Frankhouser (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh), capping off a big day for Scranton in the four-score victory.
Overall, Scranton dominated the stat sheet, outshooting the Gophers 14-5 in the win, while allowing just one shot on goal that was saved by Pankey. The Royals also held a 12-10 edge on penalty corners, as well.
The University of Scranton field hockey team returns to action on Wednesday, as the Royals host Drew in another Landmark Conference tilt at Fitzpatrick Field. Things get underway at 7 p.m.
