MADISON, N.J. – Junior forward Kelsey Bacon (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) scored in the 51st minute and The University of Scranton women's soccer team put forth another stellar defensive effort to defeat Drew, 1-0, in a Landmark Conference match on Wednesday night at Ranger Stadium.
The victory was the ninth straight for the Royals (10-2-1, 4-0 Landmark), extending their longest win streak since they won 13 straight in 2013. During the current winning streak, Scranton has outscored its opponents, 28-2.
More importantly, the win keeps the Royals in a first-place tie with Catholic and puts them on the verge of clinching a playoff berth. Scranton and Catholic will meet on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field in a rematch of last season's Landmark Conference championship, won by the Cardinals, 1-0.
On Wednesday night, the teams played to a stalemate in the first half with Scranton holding a 3-0 edge in shots. Bacon needed less than six minutes in the second half to break the tie, depositing a shot in the upper left corner after taking a pass from freshman midfielder Erica Licari (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East).
Bacon's goal was her fifth of the season, which ties her for the team lead, and the 19th of her career. Licari picked up her team-leading sixth assist and is now tied with Bacon for second on the team in points with 10.
The Scranton defense did the rest, holding the Rangers (5-8-1, 1-3 Landmark) to just two second-half shots. Junior goalkeeper Krissy Welsh (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) made the save on the only shot she faced on goal, collecting her seventh shutout of the season and 12th of her career.
The Royals owned an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks, including 10-0 in the second half.
The win also improved Scranton to 4-1-1 away from home this season. They'll return to Fitzpatrick Field for Saturday's showdown with Catholic, where the Royals are 6-1-0 on the season.
