SCRANTON, Pa. - It was a Landmark Conference men's soccer thriller between the University of Scranton and Catholic, but thanks to some timely defense by both squads, the match ended in a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes of action at Fitzpatrick Field on Saturday afternoon.

With the result, Scranton went to 6-5-2 on the year and 2-1-2 in the Landmark, while Catholic went to 5-8-2 and 2-3-1 in conference play with the draw.

Things got off to a great start for the Royals in the first half, as junior Pat Codispoti (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Chaminade) scored his first goal of the year on a header, giving Scranton the early 1-0 lead. Junior Tim DiBisceglie (Mine Hill, N.J./Gill St. Benard's School) was credited with an assist on the goal, the fourth of Codispoti's career.

Catholic, however, found the equalizer in the 34th minute, as the match went into intermission knotted up at 1-1.

In the second half, both teams had multiple chances to score, with Scranton outshooting Catholic, 6-3. The lone shot on goal in the period came in the 68th minute by DiBisceglie, but Catholic goalie Steven Lukas made a diving save on the shot, keeping the match tied.

Still knotted up at 1-1 after 90 minutes, the match went into overtime, where junior goalie Eric Hintz (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) of the Royals made a save on the lone shot on goal of the overtime periods.

With that, the match ended after 110 minutes in a draw, the second of which at home for Scranton in Landmark play on the year.

Overall, Scranton outshot Catholic 14-8 overall, while the Cardinals had a 6-3 edge on corner kicks.

The University of Scranton men's soccer team returns to action on Wednesday, taking on Moravian at Fitzpatrick Field in another Landmark Conference match-up. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
