READING, Pa. – Sophomore defender Katie Cullen (Malverne, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) picked the perfect time for her first career goal, scoring in the 86th minute to lift The University of Scranton women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Penn State-Berks on Wednesday evening.

Cullen picked up a loose ball and chipped a shot off the Penn State-Berks goalkeepers' hands and into the net with 4:51 left in the match. The goal gave the Royals (11-3-1) their 10th victory in their last 11 matches.

After a mostly quiet first half that saw just three total shots, two by the Royals, the action picked up after halftime. The Royals nearly took the lead in the 78th minute when a header by junior defender Carolyn Warner (Morris Plains, N.J./Parsippany Hills) hit the crossbar.

Junior goalkeeper Krissy Welsh (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) made five saves in net, four in the second half, for her eighth shutout  of the season and 13th of her career, which are tied for 10th-most in program history. Her play helped Scranton win despite being outshot 10-9 in the match by Penn State-Berks (10-2-2), which saw its five-game winning streak snapped.

The Royals held a 7-6 edge in corner kicks. Junior midfielder Kelly Egan (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) was the only player with more than one shot, finishing with two, for Scranton.

Scranton will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 24, when they hold Senior Day prior to taking on Moravian at 3:30 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
