GLASSBORO, N.J. - Senior Lizzy Zimmermann (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) led the way with 11 kills, as the University of Scranton volleyball team opened play at the Rowan Invitational on Friday night with a three-set sweep of New York University (25-23, 25-21, 25-23).

With the win, the Royals moved to 22-9 overall on the year, while NYU fell to 11-14 overall with the defeat.

The opening set of the match was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams going on runs.

Things came to a head with the score knotted up at 23-all late, where Scranton took control of the game by scoring the final two points, with the first set being finished off by a kill by senior Rachael Cisto (Oxford, Conn./Sacred Heart Academy).

In the second set, Scranton was able to pull away from NYU in the middle of play, as the Royals took an insurmountable 18-11 lead and never looked back in a four-point victory. The third set saw the Royals once again take an early lead, but NYU - poised to keep the match going - went on a run late to tie the set up at 23-23.

But, once again, Scranton ended a set with a flurry to put NYU away, scoring the final two points of play to end the contest and give the Royals their 22nd victory of the season.

Overall, Zimmermann paced the attack with her 11 kill evening, which matched a match-high, and marked the eighth time on the 2015 season that she hit double-digit kills in a contest.

Elsewhere, junior setter Brittany Cafiero (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) notched a match-high 26 assists, marking her ninth straight match in which she has gone over 20 assists in a contest. With her evening, Cafiero now sits at 1,901 career assists and has posted an even 800 for the 2015 season.

Finally, on the back line, sophomore Morgan Rentzheimer (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland) recorded 12 digs, while senior Stephanie Klug (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) ended the night with four block-assists.

The University of Scranton volleyball team finishes off play at the Rowan Invitational tomorrow with two matches. The Royals will first take on Cabrini at 11 a.m., then host Rowan at 1 p.m.
