Volleyball Finishes Off Rowan Invitational with Pair of Four-Set Triumphs

GLASSBORO, N.J. - The University of Scranton volleyball team capped off an impressive showing at the Rowan Invitational on Saturday afternoon, as the Royals got past both Cabrini and the host Roadrunners in a pair of four set victories.

With the wins, Scranton improved to 24-9 on the year.

Scranton 3, Cabrini 1 (24-26, 25-17, 25-22, 25-14)

In their first match of the day, the Royals bounced back from a tough loss on a tie-break in the first set to sweep three straight games and run past Cabrini to record their 23rd victory of the season.

In the win, Scranton was led on the attack by freshman Kristin Kirwan (Park Ridge, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) who posted a match-high 16 kills. Meanwhile, senior Lizzy Zimmermann (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) had another big match, ending with 13 kills.

Junior setter Brittany Cafiero (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) ended the win with 35 assists, while on the back line, junior libero Kim Marino (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) led the way with 19 digs to round out the top performers in the first match for Scranton

Scranton 3, Rowan 1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-20, 25-18)

In their final match of the weekend against host Rowan, the Royals once again dominated the final two sets to take another four-set victory to end the weekend 3-0.

In the win, senior Stephanie Klug (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) paced the Royal attack, slamming home 13 kills. Cafiero once again went over 30 assists in a match, recording 33 in the Rowan victory, while Marino led the defense yet again with 17 digs. Zimmermann had an all around match for Scranton, recording eight kills and notching 12 digs, as well.

The University of Scranton volleyball team returns to action on Saturday, October 31 as they host Gallaudet and Lebanon Valley in their final two matches of the regular season. Action begins at 11 a.m. with the Gallaudet match, then concludes at 3 p.m. with the LVC contest.
