CLERMONT, Fla.—Freshman pitcher Morgan Rentzheimer (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland) made quite a debut for The University of Scranton softball team Monday morning, striking out 10 batters in leading the Royals to a 10-4 victory over Fredonia St. (NY) in the first game of a Spring Break trip.
In the nightcap, Scranton belted out 13 hits, but dropped an 11-3 decision in five innings to Benedictine University (Ill.).
The Royals fell behind 2-0 against Fredonia St., but exploded for four runs in the bottom of the third inning and added four more in the bottom of the sixth to seal it.
Sophomore Jacqueline DeSarro (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) belted a two-run home run and finished with two hits, fellow sophomore Shannon Stricker (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell Egan) had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs, and senior Stephanie Romano (Oak Ridge, NJ/West Milford) singled twice, drove in a run, and scored twice for Scranton, now 1-1.
In the second game, freshman Kaitlyn Brogan (Oreland, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) led the Royals with three hits and junior Maria Gentile (Jefferson Township, Pa./North Pocono) and DeSarro added a pair. Scranton fell behind 7-0 after two innings and Benedictine closed it out with a 4-run rally in the bottom of the fourth to take an 11-1 lead.
The Royals will take on Oswego St. Tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m. and Lancaster Bible at 11:00 a.m.
