BEL AIR, Md. – The University of Scranton baseball team came from behind in both games on Sunday to sweep Moravian College, 5-3 in eight innings and 6-5, in the Royals' Landmark Conference opening series at Harford Community College.
Scranton (3-6, 2-0 Landmark) tied the opening game on a two-out, RBI double by junior left fielder Brian Healy (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) in the top of the seventh. They took the lead with two runs in the top of the eighth when sophomore shortstop Patrick O'Dell (Harleysville, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) and senior right fielder Zach Dignam (Bridgewater, N.J./Immaculata) came through with two-out, RBI singles.
Senior right-hander Matthew Calamoneri (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) went all eight innings for the win. He allowed three runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out five.
Freshman centerfielder Tommy Trotter (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) finished with four hits, including a double, and scored a run. O'Dell singled twice and doubled, and Healy doubled twice and drove in two.
In the second game, the Royals jumped ahead with a pair of runs in the top of the first on a two-run double by Healy. But Moravian (3-6, 0-5 Landmark) scored three times in the bottom of the first and twice more in the second to take a 5-2 lead.
Scranton cut the lead to 5-3 when Dignam scored on a wild pitch in the top of the third. It was 5-4 when Trotter scored on a two-out, RBI single by O'Dell in the fourth.
The Royals knotted the score in the sixth when senior Nick Papillo (Germantown, Md./St. John's College H.S.) doubled with one out and came around to score on a two-out single by Trotter.
The comeback was completed in the top of the seventh when Dignam led off with a single and moved to third on a single by senior first baseman Ross Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights/Blair Academy, N.J.), then scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Healy.
Sophomore lefty Michael Hagg (Ossining, N.Y./Ossinning/Brighton Academy) was brilliant on the mound, tossing 5 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out two.
Healy finished with two hits and three RBIs in the second game, Danzig had two hits and scored a run, and Dignam scored three times.
The Royals will return to action on Tuesday, March 24, when they host Marywood at 3:30 p.m.
