EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – The University of Scranton baseball team used a big third inning to pull away en route to an 8-4 victory over Wilkes University on Monday afternoon at Artillery Park.
The Royals (6-8) scored six times in the third inning to take a 7-2 lead and did not look back. Freshmen Seth Bower (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown), Kevin Nolan (Ossining, N.Y./Fordham Prep) and Justin Howell (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) all delivered RBI singles in the inning.
Freshman second baseman Brad Schneider (Ambler, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) finished with two hits, two RBIs and a run scored, freshman first baseman Patrick Mergel (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) singled and scored a run, senior outfielder Nick Papillo (Germantown, Md./St. John's College H.S.) and freshman outfielder Chase Standen (Newtown Square, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) each scored twice, and freshman outfielder Tommy Trotter (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) scored a run and drove in a run.
Six Royals pitchers combined to allow four runs on just six hits and six walks while striking out seven. Junior lefty Stephen Lee (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) got the victory, allowing two runs on two hits in two innings. Freshman Jack Hurley (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) tossed a pair of scoreless innings, and seniors Stephen Hart (Mountainside, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) and Michael Villegas (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough), and freshman Brian Jenkins (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) each threw a scoreless inning.
The Royals return to action on Wednesday, April 1, when they travel to Elizabethtown, Pa. to take on Elizabethtown College in the first game of a Landmark Conference series starting at 4 p.m.
