HUNTINGDON, Pa.—The University of Scranton softball team pounded out 24 hits in sweeping a doubleheader against Juniata College in Landmark Conference action Saturday afternoon.

In the opener, sophomore Kaitlin O’Sullivan (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy) had three hits, including a triple, and drove in three runs and sophomore Christine Kiefer (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) smacked two hits, including a home run, to lead the Royals to an 8-1 victory.

Sophomore Jacqueline DeSarro (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) had three hits and scored three times and freshman Kaitlyn Pittsman (Jefferson Township, Pa./North Pocono) drove in three runs to support freshman pitcher Morgan Rentzheimer (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland), who picked up the complete-game victory by striking out eight and limiting the Eagles to only three singles.  She is now 5-3 on the year and has struck out at least eight batters in a game five times.

The Royals broke open a close game with a six-run rally in the fourth inning that included a two-run triple from DeSarro and a three-run home run by Kiefer.

In the nightcap, Kiefer belted three hits, including a double, and drove in three runs and senior Gabrielle Santarelli (Peckville, Pa./Valley View) had two hits, including a double, and three RBI as the Royals won 16-7 in six innings.  It was Scranton’s highest run total of the season and most since scoring 17 against Juniata on April 12, 2014, at the Jessup Youth Sports Complex.

Senior Stephanie Romano (Oak Ridge, NJ/West Milford) finished with three hits and scored twice and sophomore Shannon Stricker (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell Egan) and DeSarro each belted a double for Scranton, which pounded out a season-high 14 hits.  Junior pitcher Jamie Hampsey (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) struck out four to improve to 4-0 on the season.

In her last four games, Kiefer is 9-for-17 (.529) at the plate, raising her batting average to .368.

With today’s sweep, Scranton is now 9-6 overall and 3-1 in the Landmark Conference.  The Royals will take on Elizabethtown College in a Landmark Conference doubleheader tomorrow afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania.
