JESSUP, Pa. – The University of Scranton softball team banged out 11 hits on Wednesday, but could not overcome an early six-run deficit in a 7-6 loss to Marywood at the Jessup Youth Sports Complex.
The Royals (10-8) fell behind 6-0 after the top of the sixth, but rallied to cut the deficit to 6-5 going to the seventh. The Pacers (11-10) added an insurance run in the top of the seventh that turned out to be pivotal as Scranton got a two-out, RBI triple from freshman shortstop Shannon Stricker (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell Egan) in the bottom half, but she was stranded their when Marywood recorded the final out.

Sophomore catcher Jacqueline DeSarro (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) had a two-run homer in the Royals' three-run sixth inning, and senior second baseman Stephanie Romano (Oak Ridge, N.J./West Milford) and junior right fielder Maria Gentile (Jefferson Township, Pa./North Pocono) both went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Scranton began its rally with Gentile's RBI single in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 6-1. Stricker ripped her solo shot in the fourth, and the scored stayed 6-2 until the big three-run sixth inning.
Junior pitcher Emily Simon (Freehold, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) came out of the bullpen to hold Marywood to an unearned run on three hits and a walk while striking out four in four innings.
