BETHLEHEM, Pa.—The University of Scranton softball team built up a two-run lead against perennial Landmark Conference power Moravian College in the second game of a Landmark Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Blue & Grey Field, but the Lady Greyhounds fought back to pull out a 4-3 victory.
In the first game, the Royals dropped a 3-1 decision despite getting two hits apiece from sophomores Christine Kiefer (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) and Shannon Stricker (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell Egan). Scranton got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning when Kiefer belted her third home run of the season.
Stricker and Kiefer provided much of the offense in the second game, too, combining for four hits and three RBI as Scranton opened up a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning. Stricker belted a solo home run in the second inning—her third of the season—and drove in another run in the fourth with a double, her sixth of the year.
The Greyhounds, now 24-4 and 11-1 in conference play, tied it up on a two-run home run by senior Jenn Dalickas (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights) in the fifth inning and added the winning run in the sixth when junior March Schlosbon (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) drove in sophomore Madison Newhouser (Ashland, Pa./North Schuylkill) with an infield single. Dalickas, Schlosbon and sophomore catcher Niki Maffettone (Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove) finished with two hits apiece to lead Moravian’s 9-hit attack.
SophomoreJacqueline DeSarro (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) belted a double for the Royals, who return to action Tuesday, April 21, with a non-conference doubleheader against Cazenovia College (NY) at the Jessup Youth Sports Complex beginning at 4:00 p.m. This doubleheader was originally scheduled for Monday afternoon, but moved to Tuesday due to the threat of inclement weather.
Kiefer has now hit safely in her last six games, raising her batting average from .320 to .352, while Stricker is 5-for-8 at the plate in her last three games, raising her batting average to .337.
