JESSUP, Pa. – The University of Scranton softball team found its offensive stride in the second game on Wednesday night against Wilkes, breaking out in a 12-6 victory after dropping the opener, 5-4, at the Jessup Youth Sports Complex.
The second game was called in the sixth inning due to rain and sleet, but even Mother Nature couldn't stop the Royals' bats.
Scranton (13-13) scored five times in the fourth after falling behind by a run, then scored seven times in the fifth after Wilkes (9-19) had rallied to tie the game in the top half of the inning.
The Royals, who took advantage of five errors by the Colonels in the win, received a double, two singles, an RBI and a run from sophomore second baseman Angelica Titor (Bellerose Village, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial), and a single, double, two RBIs and a run from sophomore shortstop Shannon Stricker (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell Egan).
Freshman left fielder Kaitlyn Brogan (Oreland, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) added a single, two RBIs, two runs and a stolen base, and sophomore first baseman Kaitlyn O'Sullivan (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy) singled and scored twice.
In the opener, Wilkes scored three times in the third to take a 4-2 lead and added a key insurance run in the fifth. Scranton rallied with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to get within one, but could not push the tying or go-ahead runs across.
Freshman outfielder Shanna Schaeffer (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) delivered a two-run homer in the bottom of the second that gave Scranton a short-lived 2-1 lead. In the sixth, sophomore catcher Jacqueline DeSarro (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) led off with a homer and O'Sullivan later delivered an RBI double. But she was stranded there, and Scranton left two runners on in the seventh as Wilkes secured the win.
O'Sullivan finished the opener 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI, and senior center fielder Gabrielle Santarelli (Peckville, Pa./Valley View) added a double.
The Royals are back in action on Friday when they host Hunter at 4 p.m. at the Jessup Youth Sports Complex.
