LaPLUME, Pa.—Freshman pitcher Morgan Rentzheimer (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland) and sophomore shortstop Shannon Stricker (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell Egan) made sure The University of Scranton softball team salvaged a split against Keystone College Sunday afternoon.
Rentzheimer struck out six, scattered five hits, and allowed only one earned run and Stricker finished with three hits, including two doubles and a triple, as the Royals won the nightcap, 6-2. Scranton failed, however, to hang on to a three-run lead entering the seventh inning and dropped a 10-9 decision in the opener.
Rentzheimer picked up her team-leading 11th win, which is tied for the seventh most in a single-season in Scranton history, while Stricker’s three doubles today—including one in the opener—give her 13 for the season, tied for the fifth most in Royals’ history.
Scranton, now 17-15, also received two hits, including a double, and an RBI from sophomore Katherine Kunak (Monroe, NY/Monroe Woodbury) and sophomores Christine Kiefer (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh), Jacqueline DeSarro (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic), Marisa Ciriello (Hicksville, NY/Hicksville), and Stricker, along with freshman Kaitlyn Pittsman (Jefferson Township, Pa./North Pocono), each drove in a run.
In her final at-bat in a Keystone uniform, senior Kaitlyn Sawicki (Factoryville, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) blasted a solo home run—her second home run of the season—in the seventh inning. Freshman Katie Thompson (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area), sophomoresAntonette Scialpi (Hughestown, Pa./Pittston Area) and Sara Stacey (Shickshinny, Pa./Lake-Lehman), and junior Lindsey Bucklaw (Carbondale, Pa./Carbondale Area) each had a hit for Keystone, which ends its 2015 season with a 13-19 record.
In the first game, Stricker finished with three hits, sophomore Kaitlin O’Sullivan (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy) had two hits and drove in a pair of runs, and sophomore Jenna Snyder (Thornwood, NY/Westlake) delivered a pinch-hit two-run triple during a six-run rally in the fourth inning that gave the Royals a 7-2 lead. Senior Stephanie Romano (Oak Ridge, NJ/West Milford), Kiefer, and Pittsman also doubled for Scranton, which finished with 12 hits.
Thompson and Scialpi combined for eight of the Giants’ 16 hits. In the seventh inning, Thompson, Scialpi, and sophomore Emily Long (Shamokin, Pa./Lourdes Regional) delivered run-scoring singles and Scialpi scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch. Winning pitcher and senior Karissa Worobey (Scranton, Pa./Scranton), who doubled to open the seventh inning, struck out five batters to pick up her 11th win of the season.
The Royals will return to action this Tuesday, April 28, against Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
