JESSUP, Pa.—Behind solid pitching performances from sophomore Alissa Steier (Scott Township, Pa./Lakeland) and freshman Maddie Stebich (West Deptford, NJ/Woodbury), Misericordia University swept The University of Scranton in non-conference softball action Monday at the Jessup Youth Sports Complex.
Steier limited the Royals to only three hits as the Cougars took the opener, 3-2, in nine innings and Steibich tossed a four-hitter in leading Misericordia to a 3-1 victory in the nightcap.
Steier out-dueled Scranton freshman pitcher Morgan Rentzheimer (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland), who struck out nine, allowed just five hits and only one earned run in taking the loss. Sophomore Melanie Quintanilla (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/Immaculate Conception) had two hits and junior Andi Veneziale (Burlington, NJ/Northern Burlington) belted a double for the Cougars, who scored two runs in the top of the ninth to secure the win.
Sophomore Kaitlin O’Sullivan (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy) had two hits, including a double, and freshman Kaitlyn Pittsman (Jefferson Township, Pa./North Pocono) singled and scored a run for the Royals.
Scranton took a 1-0 lead in the nightcap on a solo home run by sophomore Christine Kiefer (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) in the bottom of the first inning, but Misericordia regained the lead for good when senior Megan Hardy (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) belted her second home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth inning.
Hardy finished with two hits and scored a run and freshman Kayla Stephani (Col. X. Roads, Pa./Troy) doubled for the Cougars, who improved to 12-8 on the season.
Senior Gabrielle Santarelli (Jessup, Pa./Valley View), sophomore Angelica Titor (Bellerose Village, NY/Floral Park Memorial), and Pittsman each singled in the second game for the Royals, now 6-6.
Scranton will return to action this Wednesday, April 8, against the Monarchs of King’s College at Betzler Field in Wilkes-Barre Township, Pa., beginning at 3:00 p.m.
