Royals Hold On To Defeat King's, 9-8, In Extra Innings Thursday

WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP, Pa.—Sophomore Christine Kiefer (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) drove in the game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning to lead The University of Scranton softball team to a 9-8 victory over King’s College in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Betzler Field.

The second game was called after four innings with the score tied at 5-5 because of darkness.

Kieffer finished with three hits, including a double, and freshman Shanna Schaeffer (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) belted three hits, including a home run, as the Royals tied their season-high with 13 hits overall.  

Scranton, now 7-6, also received two hits, including a home run, from sophomore Shannon Stricker (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell Egan) and Stephanie Romano (Oak Ridge, NJ/West Milford) and freshman Jacqueline DeSarro (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) doubled.  Stricker also drove in four runs.  

Freshman pitcher Morgan Rentzheimer (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland) went the distance for Scranton and struck out nine batters to improve to 4-3 on the year.  

The Royals led 6-1 before the Monarchs put together a late rally to send the game into an extra inning  King’s scored four times in the bottom of the fifth to close the gap to one and tied it in the seventh on a solo home run by Nicole Turner (West Pittston, Pa./Wyoming Area), who finished with two hits and drove in a pair of runs.

FreshmanAlizabeth Ellsworth (Bear Creek, Pa./Coughlin) had three hits, including a home run, and scored three times and freshman Debra Renner (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) belted a double and finished with two hits for King’s, which fell to 4-9 on the season.

The Royals will return to Landmark Conference action this Saturday, April 11, against Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Scranton’s 13 hits today matches its previous high of 13 against Benedictine (Ill.) on March 16.
