Box Score
HAVERFORD, Pa. – A goal by senior Michael Romano (Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) in the 80th minute tied things up, but it wasn't enough, as the University of Scranton men's soccer team fell in their 2015 season opener at Haverford on Tuesday afternoon, 2-1.
After a scoreless first 45 minutes of action, Haverford (1-0) cracked the scoreboard early in the second period, as Sam Yorosh scored in the 49th minute to give the host Fords the 1-0 lead.
That continued to be the deficit the visiting Royals (0-1) faced until Romano's equalizer with under 10 minutes left in regulation time. Sophomore Connor Casey (Hatfield, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) was credited with an assist on the play, as Romano tallied the fifth goal of his career to tie the match.
Unfortunately for Scranton, the match remained tied for just over five minutes, as Haverford's Yarosh scored the eventual game-winner in the 85th minute, giving the Fords the one-goal victory.
Scranton, however, did not go out quietly, as the Royals narrowly missed on several opportunities to send the game to an extra frame late in regulation.
Overall, Haverford held an 11-9 edge over Scranton on total shots. In net for the Royals, junior Eric Hintz (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) made two saves on the evening, as well.
The Royals will look to bounce back on Friday, as they host Lycoming in the squad's 2015 home season opener at Fitzgerald Field. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
