CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The University of Scranton volleyball team once again finished off a weekend invitational strong, as the Royals captured two matches on the final day of the MIT Invitational, first besting Colby in a five-set thriller, then Endicott in four sets.
With the pair of victories, Scranton improved to 9-2 overall on the year.
Scranton 3, Colby 2 (25-20, 22-25, 15-25, 25-19, 15-10)
In a back-and-forth affair to open the day against Colby, the Royals picked themselves up off the mat after falling behind 2-1 entering the fourth set, taking back-to-back games to take a five-set victory to open the day.
Overall in the win, freshman Kristin Kirwan (Park Ridge, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) paced the attack, ending with 10 kills. Meanwhile, three different Royals had eight kills each in the victory - senior's Lizzy Zimmermann (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) and Rachael Cisto (Oxford, Conn./Sacred Heart Academy), and sophomore Morgan Rentzheimer (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland).
Assist wise, junior setter
Brittany Cafiero (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) tallied 34 assists in the Colby match, marking the fourth time on the year she had gone over 30 assists in a match. Cafiero also led the defense with 14 digs in the win, while Rentzheimer added 13 from the back line, as well.
Scranton 3, Endicott 1 (25-17, 27-25, 20-25, 25-19)
In their final match of the weekend, the Royals finished strong, besting Endicott after opening up a 2-0 lead in the first two sets.
In the victory, Cisto and senior Molly Loftus (Mount Carmel, Pa./Our Lady of Lourdes) paced the Royal attack with nine kills, apiece, while Rentzheimer added eight kills. Cafiero once again posted a strong effort in the assist department, posting 43 in the win, a new season-high for the junior.
Defensively, Rentzheimer posted a double-digit dig effort in the win with 12, while junior Danielle Cafiero (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) had 11 digs of her own, as well.
The University of Scranton Volleyball team returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to Summit University. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
