Volleyball Falls at Cortland State in Three Sets

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The University of Scranton volleyball team dropped an out-of-conference match at Cortland State on Wednesday night, falling in three sets (18-25, 24-26, 23-25).

With the defeat, Scranton fell to 10-3 overall, while Cortland State improved to 4-7 with the victory.

After falling behind early in the first set and dropping a decision by seven points, Scranton fought back from a 17-10 deficit in the second set to tie it up late at 18-18. Cortland, however, took back control of the set, and went up 24-22 on the Royals.

Here, Scranton won back-to-back points to knot the match up at 24-all. Unfortunately, Cortland was able to take the final two points in the set to go up 2-0 overall in the match. In the third set, Scranton went up early 13-9 on Cortland, but the hosts came back to tie it up at 13-all, setting up the stage for a close set.

As the lead swung back and forth, things came to a head with Scranton leading 23-22, where Cortland won the final three points of the set to end the match in three sets.

Overall, senior Stephanie Klug (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) led the Royal attack in the defeat with six kills, while junior Danielle Cafiero (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) went into double-digits again in assists with 24 assists. With her night, Cafiero moved into seventh all-time on Scranton's career assists list with 1,436.

Defensively, senior Kim Marino (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) registered 10 digs to lead the Royals in that category.

The University of Scranton on Friday, taking part in the Roadrunner Invitational at Ramapo College. On Friday, the Royals will take on Potsdam State at 6 p.m., then St. Joseph's (L.I.) at 8 p.m.
