MAHWAH, N.J. – The University of Scranton women's volleyball team ran out of gas on Saturday, suffering a pair of losses in straight sets to conclude the Roadrunner Invitational at Ramapo College.
Less than 24 hours after a pair of straight-sets victories on Friday night, the Royals (12-5) couldn't continue that momentum in a pair of afternoon matches.
New Paltz 3, Scranton 0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-23)
Against New Paltz, the Royals received a strong effort from freshman outside hitter Kristin Kirwan (Park Ridge, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy), who had 13 kills. The Royals also received seven kills each from seniors Stephanie Klug (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) and Rachael Cisto (Oxford, Conn./Sacred Heart Academy) and sophomore Morgan Rentzheimer (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland).
Junior setter Brittany Cafiero (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) finished with 28 assists in the match.
Ramapo 3, Scranton 0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-16)
In their final match of the day, the Royals received 10 kills and seven digs from Rentzheimer, seven kills and a block from Klug, and 28 assists and eight digs from Cafiero.
With her 56 assists on the day, Cafiero now has 1,513 career assists, which rank her seventh in Royals history.
Scranton will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 22, when they open Landmark Conference play on the road against Merchant Marine Academy at 7 p.m. in Kings Point, N.Y.
