SCRANTON, Pa. - With exactly 40 seconds left in double overtime, junior Henry Bonilla (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennington School) scored the game-winning goal, catapulting the University of Scranton men's soccer team to a thrilling 1-0 victory over Ithaca on Wednesday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field in non-conference action.
With the win, Scranton moved to 3-3 overall on the year, while Ithaca fell to 1-4-1 with the loss.
The match for the Royals was a frustrating one for most of the afternoon, as Scranton let scoring chance after scoring chance slip away. Heading into the second overtime, the Royals held a 18-5 edge on shots and a 6-2 edge on corner kicks.
It appeared the match was headed toward a 110-minute draw as play wound down in the second overtime, but the Royals had one more chance on net with under a minute to play that they cashed in on to finally end the contest.
On the game-winner, sophomore Gavin Coutts (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) played a ball to almost the near corner, then sent a cross into right in front of the box that Bonilla was able to corral and send past Ithaca's goalie to end the match, giving Scranton a well-fought one-score victory.
For Bonilla, it was his fourth career goal, third of which was a game-winner, while Coutts recorded his first career assist on the play, as well. In net, junior Eric Hintz (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) was able to notch a shutout victory, making two saves on the day for the Royals.
The University of Scranton men's soccer team returns to action on Saturday, as they Royals open Landmark Conference play at Fitzpatrick Field against Susquehanna. The match, which will also be the program's Red Card Cancer Event, begins at 1 p.m.
