KINGS POINT, N.Y. - The University of Scranton volleyball team used a strong attack to notch two Landmark Conference victories on Saturday, as the Royals got past both Catholic and Goucher in four sets, each. The matches were played at Merchant Marine.

With the victories, the Royals improved to 15-5 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the Landmark.

Scranton 3, Catholic 1 (16-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-19)

In their first match of the afternoon against Catholic, the Royals rebounded after struggling in the first set to win three straight sets to take their 14th win of the season and second in Landmark Conference play.

After falling by nine points in the first set, Catholic looked primed to take a 2-0 lead on the Royals after going up 10-4 early in the second set. But, Scranton fought back, as the Royals opened up an insurmountable 20-16 lead late in the set after rolling to a 16-6 run.

Following the two-point win the second set to knot the match up at 1-1, the Royals were able to use a late rally in the third set to go up 2-1. Tied up at 19-apiece late, Scranton ended the third game on a 6-2 run to take a 2-1 lead into the fourth set.

There, Scranton rolled to the four-set win as they continued to ride the momentum they built over the previous two sets. Once again, the Royals ended a game strong, finishing off what was once a 17-all match with a 8-2 rally to clinch the four-set win for Scranton.

Overall in the Catholic match, senior Stephanie Klug (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) had a huge match on the attack, slamming home a career-high 20 kills.

Freshman Kristin Kirwan (Park Ridge, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) and senior Lizzy Zimmermann (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) also went into double-digits in kills with 14, apiece, while junior Brittany Cafiero (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) posted a season-high 48 assists in the win. Zimmermann also paced the defense with 16 digs in the victory.

Scranton 3, Goucher 1 (25-20, 25-18, 19-25, 25-15)

It was more of the same for the Royals in their second match of the day, as the Royals capped off a sweep of Landmark matches with another four-set win, this time over Goucher.

In their three set victories in the Goucher match, Scranton controlled play, opening up a big lead early in the first, second and fourth sets to coast to a win.

On the attack, Zimmermann finished off a big day, posting a match-high 15 kills. Junior Bailey Woods (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) also had a big match in the Goucher game, posting 30 assists and 12 digs, both team-highs for the Royals.

The University of Scranton volleyball team returns to action on Tuesday, as they host Oneonta State at the John Long Center in out-of-conference action. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
