SCRANTON, Pa. - The University of Scranton men's soccer team scored two goals in each half, as the Royals coasted past visiting Wilkes on Wednesday, 4-0, at Fitzpatrick Field in out-of-conference play.
With the win, the Royals moved to 4-3-1 on the year, while Wilkes fell to 2-7 with the defeat.
In the first half, the Royals had several opportunities on net throughout the first 30 minutes of action, but failed to convert.
Finally in the 30th minute, senior Michael Romano (Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) scored unassisted after taking the ball from the midfield to six yards in front of the net, firing a shot in to give Scranton the early 1-0 edge. The goal for Romano was his second of the season.
Three minutes later, Scranton's second goal came, this time after a Wilkes defender knocked the ball into his own net for an own goal, giving the Royals a 2-0 lead into intermission.
Scranton was able to score their third goal of the match quickly into the second half, as junior Tim DiBisceglie (Mine Hill, N.J./Gill St. Benard's) scored his second goal in as many matches, this time off a corner kick from fellow junior Michael Bergen (Newtown, Pa./Pennington School), giving the Royals a 3-0 lead in the process.
The final score of the night came in the 53rd minute, as Bergen got in on the scoring with a goal off a pretty cross from junior Matthew Busch (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) to give the Royals an insurmountable four-goal lead. Bergen's goal was his team-leading third of the season.
Overall, Scranton controlled play the entire 90 minutes, outshooting Wilkes by a 16-8 margin, while also holding a 13-2 edge on corner kicks. In goal, junior Eric Hintz (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) picked up the shutout victory, making six total saves on the evening, a season-high.
The University of Scranton men's soccer team leaps back into Landmark Conference play on Saturday, taking on Juniata on the road. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
