HUNTINGTON, Pa. - A goal by Juniata in the 86th minute won the match, as the host Eagles bested the University of Scranton field hockey team, 3-2, in double overtime on Saturday evening in Landmark Conference action.
With the win, the Royals dropped to 4-10 overall and 1-4 in the Landmark Conference. Juniata improved to 5-8 overall and 2-3 in the Landmark with the victory.
After a scoreless first half, Scranton finally cracked the scoreboard in the 41st minute, as junior Meredith Campbell (Media, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Katherine McVeagh (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield Township) to give the Royals the 1-0 edge.
In the 54th minute, sophomore Cyan Scarduzio (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) scored her second goal of the season to give the Royals a 2-0 lead. On the score, junior Ryan Jones (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) was credited with an assist, her first of the season.
But, this would be the final score of the night for Scranton, as Juniata scored in the 55th minute, then again with 56 seconds remaining in regulation to send the match to overtime tied 2-2.
After a scoreless first OT, Juniata scored the game-winner a minute into the second overtime session to take the come-from-behind victory.
Overall, Juniata outshot Scranton 17-5 in the contest and held a 20-7 edge on penalty corners. In net, freshman Tate Ackerman (Endicott, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) kept the Royals in it all match, making eight saves on the evening.
The University of Scranton field hockey team will now take the week off, returning to action next Saturday at Goucher. The Landmark Conference match begins at 1 p.m.
