Volleyball Bests Colby in Three Sets at Swarthmore Quad

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Sophomore Kristin Kirwan (Park Ridge, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) led the Royals on the attack yet again, posting 14 kills, as the Royals ended the first day of the Swarthmore Quad with a three-set victory over Colby (25-23, 25-20, 25-10) Friday evening.

In their first match of the weekend, the Royals dropped a three-set decision to host Swarthmore, (20-25, 11-25, 23-25). With the split, Scranton went to 17-14 on the year.

In the Colby match, Scranton scored five of the last seven points in the first set (after being down 21-20 late) to take a two-point decision. The final two sets were controlled by the Royals, as they coasted to a five-point win in the second set, then absolutely dominated Colby in the third set, winning by 15 points to take the match in three sets.

Overall, Kirwan led the way with her 23rd double-digit kill match of the season with 14. Kirwan also posted 12 digs on the defensive end for the Royals in the win, as well.

Elsewhere, junior Kristen Sweeney (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) had nine kills for the second time in three matches, while senior Brittany Cafiero (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) went over 30 assists in a match for the 11th time on the year, ending the contest with 31.

On defense, junior Erica Byrne (Whitestone, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) matched a season-high with 16 digs, while junior Morgan Rentzheimer (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and senior Danielle Cafiero (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) finished with 10 digs, apiece.

In the Swarthmore match, the host Garnet took a three-set decision from the Royals. Sweeney led the way on the attack for Scranton in the loss, finishing with 11 kills, while Danielle Cafiero had 15 digs on defense. Brittany Cafiero finished with 24 assists in the defeat, as well.

The Swarthmore Quad will wrap up tomorrow, as the Royals take on Stockton at 1 p.m., then Catholic at 3 p.m. in a non-conference match.
