The University of Scranton field hockey team faced a tough task against a talented Vassar College team on Wednesday night and came out on the wrong end of a 2-0 final at chilly Fitzpatrick Field.
The Royals (5-11) were unable to crack the Vassar defense, which entered the night allowing just 0.53 goals per match. The Brewers (13-3) held Scranton to just four shots in the match while scoring goals in the 23rd and 55th minutes.
Freshman goalkeeper Tate Ackerman (Endicott, N.Y./Seton Central Catholic) kept the Royals in the game by making seven saves, the sixth time this season she has had seven or more saves. She made five saves in the second half alone.
Vassar held a 17-4 edge in shots and 12-1 in penalty corners. Junior forward Meredith Campbell (Media, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) had a team-high three shots for Scranton.
The Royals will be back in action on Saturday when they wrap up regular season play by hosting Catholic in a Landmark Conference match at 1 p.m. Prior to the start of the match, Scranton's two seniors will be honored in Senior Day ceremonies.
